Meeting House Cafe, 22 School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BT

P1030562This cafe is in the Quaker Meeting House in the centre of Liverpool.P1030558

The food is excellent; the carrot and coriander soup was as good as I’ve tasted anywhere.

Also all the profits go to supporting Quaker causes and everyone working in the cafe is paid the living – not the minimum – wage.P1030556P1030557

Casa da Pergola, Av. Valbom 13, Cascais, Portugal

P1030428  Casa da Pergola or P1030431Pergola House is in the centre of Cascais not far from Lisbon and it’s a surprisingly good place to have afternoon tea.

The scones are fantastic and they’re served with two different kinds of jam.

There’s a great choice of tea and the garden is beautiful too.

The Glass House, Stydd Gardens, Stoneyhurst Lane, Ribchester, PR3 3YN

P1020982 ExteriorThis is one of the most unusual – and stylish – cafes you will find.  The photo does not do it justice as inside the interior is full of lush foliage and you sit surrounded by greenery.

P1020980 superb cheese & tomato quicheThis cheese and tomato quiche was superb and the shrimps pretty good, too. Both came with a really imaginative salad.

Thru the Lookin’ Glass, 202 Blackburn Road, Wheelton, PR6 8EY

IMG_6007Thru the Lookin’ Glass is both a tea room and a soft furnishing shop in the village of Lower Wheelton (which is between Chorley and Blackburn).  The decor is very “French” and they have a small gift shop upstairs.

They do delicious cakes – which are more like puddings – and they also have a good range of gluten- and lactose-free cakes.  IMG_6012Also they’ve just extended their opening hours on Tuesday to Saturday, so they open at 10 and stay open till 5.30.  (Which is good, because so many tea rooms close about 4 o’clock – just when you fancy tea and cake.)  They are also open on Sundays from 11.00 to 4.30.

IMG_6011Even though it is very stylish inside, it attracts walkers as you’re welcome- even if you’re wearing  IMG_6005your hiking boots.

The Bear, 29 Rochdale Road, Todmorden, OL14 7LA

The Bear is a healthfood co-operative and cafe serving vegetarian and vegan food.  They work closely with Incredible Edible Todmorden which grows and campaigns for local food.  You can get gluten free cakes [this is a rather tasty gluten free citrus cake], organic bread, good coffee and a number of local beers.

And all this in a 150 year old building full of character.
